10. King Kong ($243 million)

A love story of Gorilla and a girl. King Kong was made in 2005 and not only it was commercially and critically successful but it was also famous for its budget. Producers spent $243 Million on this movie. At that time it was a record of most expensive movie ever made. Film was directed by Peter Jackson. And he did not loss any money, instead movie grossed whooping $600 Million on box office plus 3 Academy awards including for Best Visual Effects  for which most of the 243 Million were spent.

9. John Carter ($250 million)

John Carter was a Walt Disney production and they spent $250 Million to make this movie. It was directed by Andrew Stanton and released in March 2012. Movie was based on Mars where a War Veteran got trapped and then trying to free a princess. Though movie was hyped a lot for its production budget and Great visual effects, it still failed at box office. John Carter grossed $300 Million worldwide.

8. Avatar ($254 million)

Titanic was holding the record of Highest grossing movie ever, but James Cameron’s Avatar finally broke that record after 10 years. Both were James Cameron’s movie and massively expensive movies. Avatar Production budget was $254 Million, But eventually movie was a huge box office success and earned $3 Billion. Movie also received critical acclaim and nominated for 9 Academy awards and winning 3 including best visual effects. And who cares of the movie is top 10 most expensive films in the world when it grossed more than A Billion on box office.

7. Pirates of the Caribbean – Dead Man’s Chest ($256 million)

Another Movie which spend a lot of money on visual effects (in this case also for cast), another movie winning academy awards for visual effects and another movie crossing the ark of $1 Billion mark in term of net gross. Pirates of The Caribbean – Dead Man’s Chest was a critically and commercially successful movie which had a production budget of $256 Million.

6. Waterworld ($259 million)

A 1995 movie Waterworld had a production budget of $259 Million upon inflation adjustments. Movie was a box office flop and also made news because of heated argument and clash between producers and director. Reason of course was the budget of the movie which crossed its set mark at the beginning of the filming.

5. Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince ($268 million)

Sixth part of Harry Potter Series The Half Blood Prince was a critically and commercially acclaimed movie which was released in 2009. Movie had high quality of visual effects and animations and thats why production budget went on to be $268 Million. Though Producer Warner Bros. knew that they will easily earn at least triple of what they are spending and that’s what happened. Half Blood Prince broke many Box Office Records and grossed $950 Million.

4. Tangled ($274 million)
A Musical Animation movie released in 2010 after spending nearly 6 years under production. Tangled had production budget of $274 Million which is still highest for an animation movie. Tangled grossed nearly $600 Million on Box Office and also nominated for Best Original Song at Academy awards. Movie received positive review from both critics and public.

Released in 2007 Spider Man 3 was the last part of Sam Riami’s trilogy. It was made with the budget of $286 Million which producers recovered easily. Based on true incident, Titanic is often considered as one of the best movie in Hollywood. It was Directed and co produced by James Cameron and they spent huge $290 Million on this movie. 1. Pirates of the Caribbean – At World’s End ($332 million)

The third film in the mega hit Pirates of the Caribbean series; At World’s End was produced at a mind blowing $332 million grossing close to $1 billion. At World’s End marks the end of the original story line that started with Pirates of the Caribbean – The Curse of the Black Pearl. The portrayal of Davy Jones and the concept of the historical East India Company combined with a pirate story line was well received by the public. The movie also garnered positive responses from the critics. The movie directed by Gore Verbinski and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, was released in 2007. It was shot back to back with The Dead Man’s Chest.  It is the most expensive movie ever made in history.
