202. Shocking Facts About the Bermuda Triangle




Bermuda Triangle is the greatest unsolved mystery of the modern age. Also called Devil's Triangle. 
It is a triangular shaped area in the North Atlantic Ocean, from Bermuda Island to Miami, USA and Puerto Rico. Hundreds of people and numerous boats, ships and planes have disappeared inside this triangle. Reasons given for these disappearances vary from scientific to sheer myth. Here are 10 Shocking facts about Bermuda Triangle : 
 


Fact No. 1
The Bermuda Triangle is not small. In fact, it is quite large and covers an area of 440,000 miles of sea. This is larger than the combined area of Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh & Maharashtra. 


Fact No. 2
The triangle is certainly not fixed and its effect can be experienced outside of the triangle too. 


Fact No. 3
The disappearances are ascribed to UFO's and alien activity, city of Atlantis lost under the triangle, and various other technical, natural and geographical reasons. 


Fact No. 4
 Whenever any plane or ship disappears in the Triangle, its debris cannot be found. The reason behind this is that Gulf Stream runs near the triangle, which quickly gets rid of the debris. 


Fact No. 5
At least 1000 lives are lost within the last 100 years. On average, 4 aircraft and 20 yachts go missing every year. 


Fact No. 6
Inside the Bermuda Triangle, US Government has AUTEC (for Atlantic Undersea Test and Evaluation Center), which is located on the Andros Island of Bahamas. Here US Navy tests their submarines, sonar and other weapons. However many are of the view that it is more than just the testing center. 


Fact No. 7
People have experienced electronic fog in the triangle, which can be a Time Travel Tunnel too. Pilot Bruce Gernon claims he lost 28 minutes after flying through a time-warping cloud tunnel. The plane went missing from radars, only to re-emerge in Miami Beach. (Source: The Fog by Bruce Gernon.) 


Fact No. 8
One of the biggest and famous losses of US Military occurred in 1945. Five US Navy Avenger torpedo bombers flew from Fort Lauderdale, Florida for a sortie to the island of Bimini. The mission had 14 men. After about 90 minutes, the radio operators received a signal that the compass was not working. After that the communication was lost. The bombers were never found. The three planes that went for their rescue also disappeared. 


Fact No. 9
The first person to report about Bermuda Triangle was Christopher Columbus. He wrote in his journals that inside the triangle, the ship's compass stopped working and he also saw a fireball in the sky.


Fact No. 10
 Bermuda Triangle is one of the rare places on earth where the compass does not point towards Magnetic North. Instead of that, it point towards true north, which creates confusion and that's why so many ships and planes lost its course in the triangle

133. Facts That You Might Not Know About the Statue of Liberty


The first face that many late 19th and early 20th century immigrants to the United States saw upon entering her waters was that of the Statue of Liberty. Her solemn eyes and iconic countenance promises the hope of a new life for those leaving one of despair. As America welcomed the tired, the poor, and the huddled masses, our Lady Liberty, graciously given by the French over 120 years ago, has raised her torch as a beacon of hope for those New York bound passengers.

Formally called Liberty Enlightening the World, this world-renown statue has been a symbol of freedom throughout the world. And for millions of immigrants, she represented their new home, one filled with possibilities and yet, at the same time, fraught with anxiety. Many came penniless, or nearly so, hungry, and beaten down, longing for change and hoping upon hope that their tomorrows in this new land would outshine their yesterdays.

Here are some facts that you might not know about this great statue:

  • The statue was assembled twice. The statue was designed by Frenchman Auguste Bartholdi. After designing smaller scale working models, he and his crew built the full-size statue in Paris. Once fully built, the statue was disassembled, crated up, and shipped across the Atlantic for re-assembly in the United States.


  • Civil War General Sherman selected the statue's location. General William Tecumseh Sherman, Union leader during the U.S. Civil War who famously conducted his "march to the sea" to help end the war, was appointed to select the site for the statue. He chose Bedloe's Island, later renamed Liberty Island, as the location.


  • The statue functioned as a lighthouse. In 1886, U.S. President, Grover Cleveland, ordered that the statue serve as a lighthouse. After several failed attempts using the then-new electrical technology, the electric arc lights were eventually lit and were able to be seen from a distance of 24 miles away. The statue functioned as a lighthouse for the next 16 years, until March 1, 1902.


  • The statue was the tallest iron structure ever erected. In 1886, when the statue was assembled, Lady Liberty was the tallest iron structure ever built. Even though the outside is clad with copper sheets, an iron infrastructure was used to create the framework of the statue. Designed and created by Gustave Eiffel, the inner framework served as a sort of proving grounds for his later iron creation, the Eiffel Tower.


  • The copper "skin" is only 3/32ths of an inch thick. The copper cladding that covers the statue is surprisingly thin. Since the weight of the structure is carried by its internal framework, the metalsmiths were able to reduce the thickness of the copper. The copper sheets were originally 1/2-inch thick, but were hammered down the 3/32ths of an inch during construction, which is less than the thickness of 2 U.S. pennies.


  • The U.S. Congress once appropriated money to paint the statue. In 1906, the Congress of the United States voted to appropriate $62,000 to paint the statue. The original copper had started developing its beautiful blue-green patina, and some politicians were upset with the change. Public outcry kept the statue from being painted.


  • The copper patina is preserving the statue. Copper develops its patina as a result of exposure to air. Once the pristine copper has turned blue-green ("patinated") the patina serves to reduce further oxidation. Thus the patina serves to protect the copper from further deterioration. Studies have revealed that only the top 5% of the skin has oxidized in the first 100 years, with most of that occurring in the first 10-25 years through a process called early oxidation.


  • The flame has been changed three times. Bartholdi's original design of the flame was for it to be constructed of copper and clad in gold. Hoping to make it more of a navigational beacon, it was first changed so that portholes could be added and it could appear to be lit from within. When that idea failed, Gutzon Borglum, who later went on to design and create Mount Rushmore, made the second change by adding glass panels and copper framing. This design leaked terribly and caused further deterioration within the statue. Finally, as part of the 1986 restoration project, Bartholdi's original flame design was recreated and installed and is visible today.Getty Images

1. The official length is 21,196.18 km (13,170.7 mi) — 
2. Most of today's relics are the Ming Dynasty Great Wall: length 8,851 km(5,500 mi).
3. The Great Wall is more than 2,300 years old.
4. The Ming Great Wall crosses 9 provinces and municipalities: Liaoning, Hebei, Tianjin, Beijing, Inner Mongolia, Shanxi, Shaanxi, Ningxia, Gansu.

Possibly the most-visited and most-photographed slot canyon in the American Southwest, Antelope Canyon  is located on Navajo land near Page, Arizona.
Rainwater, especially during monsoon season, runs into the extensive basin above the slot canyon sections, picking up speed and sand as it rushes into the narrow passageways making it one of the most photogenic scenarios. 

2.Bamboo Forest, Japan

The Sagano Bamboo Forest is located to the northwest in Kyoto Basin, Japan, covering an area of 16 square kilometers. It is one of the most beautiful natural environment in entire Japan, not only because of its natural beauty but also because of the sound the wind makes as it blows through the thick bamboo grove.

3. Black Forest, Germany

The Black Forest is not only one of the most varied, but also one of the biggest and best known holiday regions in Germany. The site is more than 200km long and 60 km wide. The dense growth of conifers in the forest blocks out most of the light inside the forest.The Black Forest is the birthplace of skiing in central Europe, with the first ski club being founded at the Feldberg Mountain that rises to a height of 1,493 meters. It was here that the first wooden skis were produced and the first ski lift built. Today, the Feldberg region is one of the largest ski resorts outside of the Alps.

The canola flower fields in China are one of the world’s beautiful sites in small Luoping (Yunnan, China). Vast farmlands get covered in golden, yellow rapeseed flowers stretching as far as the eyes can see, all the way to the horizon.

Luoping County in the east part of Yunnan Province is one of China’s primary canola production bases, as well as a base or bee raising and honey collection. Where there are canola flowers, there are bound to be bees. Bees in the area live on the canola flower pollen and see to it that each year has a good harvest.
The best time to visit Luoping for this visual fiesta is February through March, by June the show is over.

5.Mount Roraima, South America

Mount Roraima (mountain, South America) giant flat-topped mountain, or mesa, in the Pakaraima, the 31 square kilometer summit area of Mount Roraima is defined by 400 meter tall cliffs on all sides and includes at the point where the boundaries of Brazil, Venezuela, and Guyana meet. 

The tabletop mountains of the Pakaraima are considered some of the oldest geological formations on Earth, dating back to some two billion years ago. The result is the staggering landscape of Mount Roraima. Angel falls is located on a similar tabletop mountain some 130 miles away. 

6.Hang Son Doong, Vietnam

Vietnam’s Hang Son Doong cave is the largest in the world, with caverns big enough to fit an entire city street inside them. 

The cave is located near the Laos-Vietnam border. The cave has an underground river running through the first 1.6 miles (2.5 kilometers) of the limestone cavern, as well as giant stalagmites more than 230 feet (70 meters) high. At 262-by-262 feet (80-by-80 meters) in most places, the Son Doong cave beats out the previous world-record holder, Deer Cave in the Malaysian section of the island of Borneo. Deer Cave is no less than 300-by-300 feet (91-by-91 meters), but it’s only about a mile (1.6 kilometers) long.

Hitachi Seaside Park in Japan, next to the Ajigaura Beach, is a flower park and a popular tourist destination. The park covers an area of 3.5 hectares and the flowers are amazing all year round. 

The park is best known for its seasonal flowers- Daffodils and Tulips in spring, Nemophilia and Rose in early summer and Kochia and cosmos in autumn. The blooming period is called “Nemophilia Harmony” and is a sight to relish, about a million daffodils (narcissus) bloom in the Suisen garden amidst pine trees.

Lavender Fields are a sight not to be missed, the color, the texture, and the scent of a lavender field encapsulate for many the essence of Provence. Lavender is said to heal insect bites and burns as well as repel insects. It can soothe headaches if you apply it to the temples and it helps you sleep if you have the flowers by your pillow. Late June through July is the best season for lavender in Provence.

Salar de Uyuni is a salt flat located in the southwest Bolivia. 
Salar is a Spanish word translating into “salt flat,” and Uyuni is Spanish for “enclosure.” As part of the Andes, the Salar is located at 11,995 feet (3,656 m) above sea level. 

Salar de Uyuni is the largest salt flat in the world accounting for 4,086 square miles (10,582 sq km). The crust is comprised of salt and covers a sea of brine that ranges from 7 to 66 feet (2 to 20 m) deep. Collectively, the Salar de Uyuni accounts for between 50 to 70% of the world’s lithium reserves.

The absolutely breathtaking walking on water illusion is something that is very unique to the salt flats found in Salar De Uyuni, Bolivia.

10.Tunnel of Love, Ukraine

Giant trees surround this old train tunnel located in Klevan, Ukraine. The magical-looking place is nicknamed “The Tunnel of Love” by locals because it is a popular spot for couples to visit.The beautiful train track is naturally covered by green trees and makes a tunnel.

It was part of Poland between WWI and WWII. This was an industrial track (apparently for a steel mill) and won’t show on any map view, satellite is needed.

1. The source of the Amazon River is Lago Villafro in the Andes Mountains, Peru.
2. The Amazon River is the principle path of transportation for people and produce with transport ranging from balsa rafts and dugout canoes to hand-built wooden rivercraft and modern steel hulled craft.
3. The Amazon is the major South American river based in the Amazon basin. It surrounds the Amazon Rainforest and covers territory belonging to nine nations: Brazil, Peru, Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Bolivia, Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana.
4. It is characterized by extensive forested areas that become flooded every rainy season.
5. It is the second longest river in the World approximately 6400 kilometres (4000 miles) – only the Nile, in Africa, is longer.
6. Because it is so vast, it is sometimes called The River Sea.
7. Anaconda snake is found in shallow waters in the Amazon Basin.
8. Vicente Yanez Pinzon was the first European to sail into the waters in 1500. The first European to travel the length of the Amazon River was Francisco de Orellana in 1542.
9. It has over 1,100 tributaries, 17 of which are over 1,500 kilometres long. A tributary is a stream, or smaller river, that flows into a main river.

Oceans cover most of our planet, but we still have a lot to learn about this incredible ecosystem. Brush up on your knowledge of our watery world for World Oceans Day.

1. Earth's oceans are unique in the Universe — as far as we know

Earth is the only known planet or moon to have large bodies of liquid water on its surface. Our planet lies in the "Goldilocks" zone — not too hot, not too cold and with enough atmospheric pressure to prevent liquid surface water from evaporating into space.
Although we don't yet know of any other planets or moons with liquid water oceans, it's likely that they do exist and we just haven't found them. In our own solar system, there is growing evidence that the planet Mars may have liquid water not on the surface but underground. There is also strong evidence that liquid oceans may be hidden beneath the thick icy surfaces of three of Jupiter's moons (Europa, Callisto and Ganymede) and two of Saturn's moons (Titan and Enceladus).

2. For every species of marine life we know of, at least another three are yet to be discovered

Our oceans teem with life ranging from the blue whale — the biggest animal on Earth — to tiny microbes.
But nobody knows exactly how many different species live in this environment. There is no data for around 20 per cent of the ocean's volume.
The Census of Marine Life, a 10-year international project to identify life in our oceans, found nearly 250,000 species. But scientists believe a least a million species of marine life could be out there, and that's not counting the tens or even hundreds of millions of kinds of microbes that make up the majority of marine life.
What we do know is that ocean life survives in the most extreme environments. Scientists have found life that can survive in temperatures that melt lead, where seawater freezes into ice, or there's no light or oxygen.
In fact, the dark ocean zone between 1000 and 5000 metres known as the abyssal zone has a far greater range of marine life than we once thought.
The deep waters around Australia's Great Barrier Reef are home to a stunning array of life such as the deep sea jellyfish atolla (above), which was discovered by Australian scientists in 2006.

3. Water takes around 1000 years to travel all the way around the whole globe

The oceans not only have waves, tides and surface currents — they also have a constantly moving system of deep-ocean circulation driven by temperature and salinity.
Known as the global ocean conveyor belt or thermohaline current (thermo = temperature, haline = salinity), this deep ocean current gets one of its "starts" in the polar region near Norway.
As sea ice forms, the water left behind becomes saltier and denser and begins to sink, making room for warmer and less dense incoming surface water, which in turn eventually becomes cold and salty enough to sink.
The cold dense water flows along the ocean bottom all the way from the northern hemisphere to the Southern Ocean where it merges with more cold dense water from Antarctica and is swept into the Indian and Pacific Oceans.
Eventually it mixes with warmer water and rises to the surface before finding its way back to the Atlantic. It can take 1000 years to complete this cycle.

4. Half of all the oxygen we breathe is produced in the ocean

Some of this oxygen is produced by sea weeds and sea grasses, but the vast majority of the oxygen is produced by phytoplankton, microscopic single celled organisms that have the ability to photosynthesise. These tiny creatures live in the surface layer of the ocean (and in lakes and rivers) and form the very base of the aquatic food chain.
During photosynthesis, phytoplankton remove carbon dioxide from sea water and release oxygen. The carbon becomes part of their bodies.

5. The oceans may seem vast, but they're small compared to the overall size of our planet

About 71 per cent of the Earth's surface is covered by water, but the average depth of the oceans is only about 4.2 kilometres. The deepest point is in the Marianas Trench in the Pacific Ocean, around 11 kilometres below sea level.
To get some idea of how the average depth of the oceans compares to the scale of the Earth, imagine if the world's tallest building (the 829-metre Burj Dubai) was the distance from the centre of the Earth to the surface. The average depth of the oceans would be the equivalent of just 10 centimetres at the very top. Mount Everest would be another 21 centimetres above that.
All of the water on Earth (the oceans, which account for 96.5 per cent, plus groundwater, rivers, lakes, snow and ice) would fit into a sphere about 1,385 kilometres in diameter, according to the US Geological Survey. The Earth's diameter is roughly nine times larger (12,700 kilometres).

6. Rogue waves really do exist

For centuries maritime folklore has had tales of gigantic waves that would appear without warning in mid-ocean and sink ships, even in good weather. These rogue waves are not necessarily the biggest waves ever found at sea, but isolated waves way bigger than what any crew might expect in a given sea state.
By definition, rogue waves are ones whose height is more than twice that of the prevailing conditions.
The largest scientifically measured rogue waves were encountered in February 2000, by the British oceanographic research vessel, the RRS Discovery. West of Scotland it recorded individual waves of up to 29.1 metres, almost the height of a 10 storey building.
The causes of these waves are not completely understood, however they seem to happen more often when a strong ocean current runs counter to the direction of the waves.

7. Oceans hold around 50 times more carbon than the atmosphere

Cold water can dissolve much more CO2 than warm water, so the cold polar regions are net absorbers of CO2. But as the cold water finds its way to warmer tropical areas, the oceans release CO2 back into the atmosphere. The equatorial Pacific is thought to be the biggest single natural source of CO2 in the atmosphere. Most of this carbon is exchanged with the atmosphere on a timescale of several hundred years.
Prior to the industrial revolution, the uptake and release of CO2 on land and ocean was in a dynamic equilibrium. Since then, the oceans are thought to have absorbed about half of the carbon dioxide released from the burning of fossil fuels, with the rest remaining in the atmosphere.

8. The great garbage patch is more like a plastic soup

The existence of theThe Great Pacific Garbage 'patch' in the North Pacific Ocean was confirmed in 1997. It lies at the centre of a large rotating ocean current — or gyre. Since then, a soup of plastic pollution has been found at the centre of all the world's major gyres — in the South Pacific, the North and South Atlantic and in the Indian Ocean.
Plastic trash takes a very long time to bio-degrade in the oceans. The actions of sunlight and wave motion tend to break plastic objects into smaller and smaller pieces until they eventually become smaller than a grain of sand. That's why there is no obvious floating island of plastic debris, but rather a fine soup of plastic particles floating in the water column.
These fine particles are now thought to act like sponges, concentrating pollutants such as PCBs, DDT and PAHs. When the particles are ingested by filter feeding sea creatures, they enter the food chain and ultimately into fish destined for human consumption.
They also harbour unique colonies of microbes, but it is too early to say what impact this emerging 'plastisphere' will have on marine ecological environments.
Plastics only came into widespread use after 1945, but can already be found in every part of the marine environment from the surface to the seafloor.

9. The Atlantic Ocean is getting bigger and the Pacific Ocean is getting smaller

Twenty million years ago there was no Atlantic Ocean. But then, thanks to plate tectonics, the South American and North American continents were separated by a rift valley that eventually turned into the Atlantic Ocean. The complementary shapes of the South American and African continents have long been noticed, but it wasn't until the 1960s that the theory of plate tectonics became accepted as the explanation.
These days, the Atlantic Ocean is growing at a rate of five centimetres per year, as new sea floor is created by volcanic activity along its mid-ocean ridge.
On the other hand, the much older Pacific Ocean is currently estimated to be shrinking by two to three centimetres each year. Again, this comes down to plate tectonics because the Pacific Ocean has subduction zones on three sides — where the Pacific plate submerges beneath other plates.
The Pacific's "Ring of Fire" broadly maps the areas where this subduction occurs and accounts for around 90 per cent of the world's earthquakes.

10. The most remote point in the oceans is called Point Nemo


The part of the ocean farthest from land lies in the South Pacific and is known as Point Nemo or 'The Pole of Inaccessibility'.
Point Nemo isn't an actual 'point' as (obviously) there's no land there — it's simply a spot in the ocean that happens to be 2,688 kilometres from the nearest land — Ducie Island, part of the Pitcairn Islands, to the north; Motu Nui, one of the Easter Islands, to the northeast; and Maher Island, part of Antarctica, to the south.
The name 'Nemo' comes from Jules Verne's Captain Nemo of Twenty Thousand Leagues under the Sea — not the film Finding Nemo. If you go to Google Earth and zoom in to 48°52.6′S 123°23.6′W you'll find it thoughtfully marked.
